Alpujarra Trek
Set off for adventure!
We’ll depart from Picena for a 4–5 hour trek through the breathtaking Alpujarras. Picture this: whitewashed villages, steep flower-lined streets, and crystal-clear mountain springs. Along the way, we might stop for authentic Andalusian tapas in a cozy village bar or enjoy a picnic in the majestic Sierra—depending on where our mules decide to lead us.
This experience isn’t just about the scenery; it’s about flavours, sensations, and moments that linger long after the journey ends.
Ready to make some unforgettable memories?
Mountain Trek
Get ready for an 8-hour expedition on mule and horseback through the breathtaking landscapes of the Sierra. Picture yourself crossing canyons and streams or riding toward the ancient chestnut tree near Laroles—each route offering its own wonder.
Depending on the season, the mountains reveal different charms: crisp, dramatic scenery in cooler months, or refreshing, crystal-clear air when the days grow warm. At midday, we pause to enjoy homemade Alpujarreño dishes crafted from local ingredients, savoured beside a babbling stream or another picturesque spot along our journey.
This experience nurtures a special bond between us and our animal companions, ensuring we return with full hearts and uplifted spirits.
Sierra Nevada Trek
This three-day trek takes us from Picena, at about 600 metres above sea level, up into the Sierra Nevada to a mountain bothy located around 1,600 metres. In summer, the starting point may shift higher into the mountains, depending on where the animals are grazing.
As we ascend, the landscape transforms constantly. With every metre gained, the horizon widens—revealing views that stretch from the Mediterranean all the way to the Atlas Mountains of Africa.
We’ll be accompanied by our loyal dogs and a pack mule carrying our equipment, just as it has traditionally been done in these mountains.
Our first night will be spent in a welcoming, traditional cortijito-refuge.
On the second day, we climb toward the summit, crossing paths with wild goats, cows, and other inhabitants of the Sierra.
That night, we stay at a Buddhist Retreat Centre situated at around 2,000 metres. There, we can enjoy hot showers, comfortable beds, and—if you wish—access to the yoga and meditation hall for a moment of quiet renewal.
The final day leads us back along a different path, with a delicious lunch along the way—either out on the trail or in a cozy local bar—before returning to our starting point.
Along the way, we’ll form new friendships and create memories of a journey that will stay with us for years to come.
Cowboy Trek
This five-day adventure immerses you in real cattle work alongside the owner—our very own “cowboy.”
Day 1
We begin on horseback and muleback, giving everyone time to get comfortable with the animals. That evening, we settle into Villa El Largo for a delicious supper and a restful night.
Day 2
We ride up into the Sierra, passing the ancient millennial chestnut tree on our way to a traditional cortijo–refugio at around 1,600 metres, where we spend the night.
Days 3 & 4
These days unfold as true open adventure, guided by the movements of the cows, who graze freely across more than 9,000 hectares of mountain pasture. With the help of our horses, mules, and loyal dogs, we’ll gather and guide the herd toward a high-mountain corral nestled in the woods.
For these two nights, we stay at a Buddhist Retreat Centre situated at around 2,000 metres. Here we’ll enjoy homemade traditional meals, fresh bread, and local sweets. Comfortable beds and access to the yoga and meditation hall offer space for deep rest. Nights at this altitude gift us breathtaking stargazing, including the Milky Way in all its splendour.
Day 5
We return to the village and to Villa El Largo, where a small celebration awaits—music, wine, good food, and the chance to share stories of the journey and the work accomplished.
This is an authentic, hands-on experience where your connection with the animals becomes essential to carrying out the tasks of a true mountain cow herder.
